Proposal for Belhi School
Background: Belhi is a small village in Darbhanga district of Bihar with low literacy and educational level especially among females. The members belong to a minority community with conservative attitude and limited financial resources. Hence girls and small children are not encouraged to study. With lack of proper primary education, the secondary education of the child is also at stake. The nearest government school is 4-5 km away.
Objective:
1. To provide literacy and basic education to 60 children and to prepare them for higher education.
2. To create employment for the educated youth of the village and maybe prevent some migration to unfriendly city conditions and jobs.
Project description: Belhi School was started in 2006 with the objective of initiating the process of education among the poor Muslim community in Belhi village. The major issues are poverty and illiteracy. This proposal is for sustaining the school so that children are prepared to become part of the regular schooling system. The main aim is to provide literacy and primary education to approximately 60 children who are denied education due to their gender and poverty. Presently there are about 40 children enrolled in the school with one full time teacher and one part time teacher. We have provided some of the poorest with books and notebooks. A table and chair has been provided for the teacher. Some local sitting chaukis have been provided for students to sit. Premises have been allotted.
No of children covered: 60
Duration of the Project: 1 year
Project team: 2 local teachers from the community
