India is ranked with the 2nd largest population. The rate of literacy is higher as compared to some years ago. There are several reasons for the low levels of literacy in India, not the least of which is the high level of poverty. Over one-third of the population is estimated to be living below the poverty line. Although school attendance is free, the costs of books, uniforms, and transportation to school can be too much for poor families. It is noticed that the illiteracy rate is high among girls. Poor families are also more likely to keep girls at home to care for younger siblings or to work in family enterprises.

The Indian government's commitment to education is stated in the constitution with an article promising "free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of 14" but many children between 6-14 years are not going to school, according to a Government report. The report also indicates that just a little over one-third of all children who enroll in grade one are able to reach grade eight. A nation can progress only with the power of education. Join hands with related NGOs to provide education to this group and help build India's future.

With a small contribution of Rs.1200 per month you can sponsor a non-formal center of a village. Your contribution would go for providing children and women with literacy, teaching them a skill and empowering them to earn their livelihood.
